VW’s 188mpg Golf
February 26, 2014
Volkswagen is powering up for the launch of a new plug-in hybrid version of the Golf hatchback which will hit the UK streets by the end of this year.
It is called the Golf GTE – with the E standing for electricity – and the newcomer will make its official debut at next month’s Geneva Motor Show. And VW claims it can achieve a whopping 188mpg.
The Golf GTE combines the environmental benefits of an electric car with the dynamics of a Golf GTI. It has a 1.4-litre 150PS TSI direct-injection petrol engine and a 102PS electric motor, together producing 204PS of power.
Using the electric motor alone the car is capable of speeds of 81mph, but with the TSI engine as well, it can sprint from 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds and on to a potential 135mph.
On the efficiency front, the combined fuel consumption is said to be 188mpg with carbon emissions of just 35g/km.
In pure electric mode, which is activated by pressing a button, the Golf GTE can travel up to 31 miles and the electric power can also be saved.
VW says the lithium-ion battery can be charged in around three-and-a-half hours from a domestic mains outlet, or in 150 minutes from a domestic wallbox.
Visually, the GTE manages to blend the style of the e-Golf and the GTI, so the front bumper features C-shaped LED daytime running lights, like those on the e-Golf, plus horizontal fins, as with the GTI.
And where the GTI features red, the GTE has blue accents, including across the radiator grille and into the headlights, while 18-inch alloy wheels will be standard.
Only five-door versions will be available and creature comforts include sat nav, Bluetooth, DAB radio plus bespoke functions for electric vehicles such as the ability to identify potential destinations in electric range, and electric charging points.
The GTE will also feature an e-manager which allows the driver to preset vehicle charging, as well as interior cooling or heating and a power meter which shows the status of the battery.
Full details including pricing will be announced in the summer and the order books open in August.
