Toyota Land Cruiser – First Drive (2025)

When faced with the most demanding terrains and challenging driving conditions, the vehicle you’ll want to rely on is the Toyota Land Cruiser. This is the choice experts make for the toughest expeditions, and it’s built to handle anything that comes its way.

With more than 70 years of heritage, Toyota has used its wealth of experience and know-how to develop the latest seven-seater Land Cruiser, a model that takes performance to the next level.

While it’s not the cheapest option with prices starting from a fiver shy of £75k, it’s on a par with its competitors in terms of cost. At launch, two versions were available called Invincible and First Edition. The latter was a limited release for 2024 and has now sold out. In fact, demand has been so high, dealers are already waiting for new stock to meet 2025 orders.

We tested the Land Cruiser Invincible, costing £74,995 and powered by a re-engineered 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission. With 201bhp and 500Nm of torque, this 2.3-tonne vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 10.9 seconds, reaching a top speed of 105mph while delivering a combined 26.6mpg and carbon emissions of 279g/km.

One of the new features is a fresh platform that enhances rigidity and provides exceptional handling, ride quality, and responsiveness – both on and off the road.

On faster dual carriageways and motorways, the Land Cruiser is a comfortable cruiser and far more refined than the outgoing model. It can sit comfortably at 70mph and also shines on winding country lanes, demonstrating impressive agility through tight bends with minimal body roll and excellent grip.

If you push the automatic transmission too hard, it can get a bit noisy, but a gentler touch on the throttle leads to a much smoother and more refined driving experience.

The steering is beautifully weighted, offering great driver feedback, and there are three driving modes called Eco, Normal, and Sport that adjust the dynamics. But the Land Cruiser has go-anywhere ability and for off-road adventures, it is equipped with a Multi Terrain Select system that automatically adjusts the vehicle’s settings for the conditions. It can wade through water up to 700mm deep, features high and low range gears, a crawl function, and locking diffs. The front anti-roll bar can also be disconnected to help maintain wheel contact on uneven terrain.

Our Invincible version was sitting on with 20-inch wheels, which can make the ride feel a little jarring on rougher roads. The First Edition, with its smaller 18-inch wheels, would likely handle these surfaces better. However, the Land Cruiser still feels practically indestructible, ready to tackle whatever Mother Nature throws its way.

Additionally, driver visibility is excellent thanks to the high seating position, along with large windows and well-positioned pillars providing a clear view. Parking sensors and a rear-view camera make manoeuvring into tight spaces easier.

Design-wise the Land Cruiser has strong kerb appeal retaining its iconic, rugged styling that’s even more striking in its Sand-coloured shade. Its angular lines, rather than soft curves, emphasise its rugged strength. And notable features include distinctive oblong light clusters with triple light inserts, a robust grille bearing the TOYOTA name, a panoramic roof, privacy glass, a full-size spare wheel, rear spoiler, roof rails, side steps, grain-effect scuff plates and 20-inch alloy wheels.

Climb aboard, aided by the side steps and grab handles, and you’ll find a spacious, high-end cabin brimming with advanced technology. The dashboard features a titanium-effect finish, and multimedia functions are controlled through a 12.3-inch high-definition touchscreen. All the vital driving information is clearly displayed on a 12.3-inch digital screen with crisp, easy-to-read graphics, while a head-up display provides key data such as speed, speed limits, and sat nav directions.

It’s also a well-equipped model offering cloud-based navigation with real-time traffic updates, a 14-speaker JBL sound system, seamless smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and much more besides. When you need to focus entirely on the road, the ‘Hey Toyota’ voice assistant allows hands-free control of various functions.

The powered front seats are upholstered in elegant leather, offering both heating and ventilation, as do the outer seats in the second row. The steering wheel is also heated, ensuring comfort in colder conditions

For those venturing off-road, the Land Cruiser anticipates the challenges of rough terrain, featuring protective knee pads and padded doors to cushion any bumps. Plus, there are plenty of physical buttons designed for easy use, even while wearing gloves or when the vehicle is bouncing over tough surfaces. It’s clear the designers have thought of everything to ensure a comfortable, practical experience.

But we need to remind ourselves this is a seven-seat vehicle, so needs to cover practicality bases along the way too. And it does just that. The cabin is incredibly spacious, offering one of the rare seven-seater configurations that comfortably accommodates seven adults. There’s ample room in the front, while the second-row seats can slide forward or backward to provide extra passenger or storage space. Large windows offer excellent visibility with charging ports available to keep devices powered on the go.

Accessing the rear seats is a breeze, as the second-row seats can be moved forward at the press of a button, and the rear doors open wide for easy access.

With all seven seats in use, boot space is a bit limited at just 130 litres of capacity (170 litres to the roof). However, when the rear seats are folded flat into the floor, which can be done automatically with the press of a button, the space expands to 566 litres (949 to the roof). If you only need the front seats upright, the boot capacity grows to an impressive 1,053 litres (1,875 litres to roof) and a powered tailgate is another popular feature.

There are numerous practical storage compartments throughout the vehicle, with a lockable glovebox, cup holders in the front and rear, door bins, a deep central cubby, a wireless smartphone charger, seat back pockets, and additional trays for smaller items.

And with family getaways in mind, the Land Cruiser shines with a 3.5-tonne towing capacity, effortlessly handling heavy loads thanks to its exceptional 4×4 system.

Owners can have full confidence in the Land Cruiser’s reliability too, a quality where Toyota truly shines. This is backed by an impressive warranty package whereby the standard three-year, 60,000-mile coverage can be extended for up to 10 years or 100,000 miles, as long as regular services are completed at authorised Toyota workshops.

To date, the Land Cruiser has clocked up more than 11.3 million sales across 170-plus countries and sales, along with orders, are stacking up for the latest version.

And after spending time behind the wheel of this powerhouse, it’s clear why the vehicle remains so popular. While it excels in tackling the toughest off-road conditions, it’s the refinement on the road that stands out most for its improved refinement. With seating for seven, it’s well-suited as a family vehicle, though if you don’t plan on using its exceptional off-road capabilities, there are more affordable seven-seaters with competent 4×4 systems available.

Toyota Land Cruiser Invincible 2.8 Auto (2022)

When a model carries the name ‘Invincible’ after its title it has an awful lot to live up to – thankfully that vehicle is the go-anywhere Toyota Land Cruiser so the tagline is spot on.

This five-door giant of a car, with all the off-road ability to take on any expedition, looks as tough as they come with rugged styling, but it also features all the creature comforts we demand in vehicles these days.

Our test car was powered by a 2.8-litre diesel engine delivering 201bhp and 500Nm of torque. It featured a six-speed automatic transmission and cost £57,550.

The Land Cruiser has plenty of road presence with side steps for easy access and grab handles to complete the job of climbing into the cab. Other chunky design cues include a muscular upright stance, a distinctive grille housing the Toyota emblem, sweeping front light clusters, mudguards, smoked tail lights, dark tinted windows, 19-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, puddle lamps and a huge side-hinged rear door.

It can transport up to seven people with the pair of rear seats folded flat to the boot floor when not in use. They can be raised at the press of a button when needed.

Comfort levels are impressive with ample room for five adults to stretch out with the trio of second row passengers enjoying plenty of head, leg and shoulder room.

Up front, there are all manner of techno treats to explore, including Toyota Touch 2 with Go that introduces full navigation, voice activation, smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a 14-speaker JBL sound system and Wi-Fi connectivity.

There is triple-zone climate control, a rear-view camera with front and rear parking sensors which is essential in a vehicle stretching over 4.8 metres in length, plus comfortable powered seats with upmarket leather upholstery. The seats can be heated or ventilated and the steering wheel can also be warmed up against the winter chill.

When it comes to performance, the Land Cruiser is not the most refined, so expect to hear a little engine and wind noise on faster roads. It is, however, very capable and deceptively agile for its size.

The acceleration through the automatic gearbox is smooth and there are paddles for added driver engagement, along with drive modes called Comfort/Eco, Normal and Sport.

Despite weighing in at 2.4 tonnes, this vehicle can power its way from 0-62mph in 9.9 seconds and maxes out at 108mph. That’s pretty impressive for a model with all the off-road settings to tackle any terrain.

The ground clearance can be raised or lowered and there are high and low range settings for more challenging experiences. It can also tow a trailer or caravan weighing up to three tonnes.

Although we didn’t venture far from the Tarmac apart from some driving across sand, the Land Cruiser is a very capable vehicle for day-to-day use. It’s well balanced through quieter lanes and with elevated seating, the driver visibility across the hedgerows is excellent.

There is plenty of zip for quick bursts of pace and it cruises effortlessly at 70mph on motorways. Fuel economy for such a large vehicle is not too bad with a combined 27.7-29.4mpg and carbon emissions from 250g/km.

And with practicality in mind, the Land Cruiser is perfect for a holiday with ample room for all the family and plenty of luggage. The boot, accessed via the rear door, can hold 190 litres of luggage with all seven seats in use, increasing to 1,270 litres with the seats in rows two and three dropped flat.

Elsewhere, there is a chilled cubby bin, front and rear cup holders, lockable glovebox, deep door pockets, a sunnies holder, seat back nets and lots of handy trays.

The vehicle is packed with safety kit, such as a pre-collision system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, intelligent adaptive cruise control, road sign assist, lane departure alert, lane trace assist, automatic high beam, blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert and lots more besides.

There are also a number of safety features for off-roading ventures, including crawl control.

All in all, the Toyota Land Cruiser is quite the all-round package for anyone looking for a robust vehicle that has plenty of 4×4 capabilities but can double up for everyday use too.

Toyota Land Cruiser Utility 2.8 Diesel Auto (five-door, five-seat)

It’s not very often you take a week’s holiday and have a carefree glint in your eye when severe storms with flood warnings are forecast. But it’s not every day you are driving the unassailable Toyota Land Cruiser either.

That was my scenario for a break in Devon as storms swept the west coast of England. But flash floods, torrential downpours and gale force winds couldn’t put the dampers on the holiday thanks to the hard-core SUV with ‘proper’ off road capabilities.

The new 2018 Land Cruiser boasts a more robust exterior and also has improved quality throughout the car. And the line-up now features a back-to-basics model aimed at commercial customers that is stripped of many creature comforts. And that’s the model we clocked up 900 miles in during our week-long break.

The new entry-level Utility version in five-door guise (there is a three-door version) is priced at £37,090, although metallic paint added a further £700 to the cost of our test car. Like the rest of the line-up, it was powered by a 2.8-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine delivering 177PS of power and 420Nm of torque. Despite its larger-than-life dimensions, the performance figures are quite impressive with a 0-62mph sprint time of 12.1 seconds, maximum speed of 108mph and combined fuel economy of 38.1mpg with carbon emissions of 194g/km. 

One glance in the direction of the Land Cruiser will leave you in little doubt that it means business and is a go-anywhere vehicle. It boasts a bold, muscular stance, tinted rear windows, a blacked-out grille, sweeping light clusters, roof rails and chunky wheels.

You literally have to climb up into the cabin (there are grab handles to assist) and the interior is neatly designed with practicality in mind. There are lots of wipe-clean, hard-plastic surfaces that would look cheap on a soft-roader, but are just perfect for the Land Cruiser. Other features include Bluetooth to connect a smartphone, along with a six-speaker sound system and air conditioning. Our car also had a CD player which is quite rare these days.

If, however, you like to surround yourself with luxury and lots of techno treats then simply move up the four-trim scale to Invincible for the likes of Toyota Touch 2 with Go for a full navigation set-up including real time traffic updates and speed camera warnings, a 14-speaker JBL sound system, a rearview camera, plus front with rear parking sensors and triple zone air conditioning.

Despite its bulky dimensions – the Land Cruiser measures 4.8 metres in length and is 1.8 metres wide – it doesn’t take long to get confident behind the wheel and feel comfortable with the way the vehicle handles. The Land Cruiser weighs 2.2 tonnes so it’s not exactly a lightweight model to throw around bends, but it can be pushed along at quite a click. Motorway driving is effortless and the engine is happy cruising at national speed limits. And thanks to its size it won’t be fazed by any sudden gusts of wind.

Out on the twisting country lanes, the high-seated driving position offers a commanding view of the road ahead and above the hedgerows. Any sharper bends need to be treated with a degree of respect as there is a fair amount of body sway if attacked too eagerly, but generally the road-holding is very assured.

Then in busy town centres, the Land Cruiser proved deceptively agile and easy to manoeuvre. The lack of any parking sensors or a rearview camera takes a little getting used to, but it’s worth remembering this is the entry level model.

On the practicality front, the Land Cruiser is a winner with ample space for five adults to travel in comfort and they can bring all the luggage they want too. That’s because the boot can swallow 640 litres of kit – a limit that increases to 1,270 litres with the 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats dropped flat. The boot is accessed via a side-hinged door that is fine unless someone parks too close behind you. Elsewhere, there are deep door pockets, cup holders, a glovebox, a dual-compartment central bin and some trays.

Although we didn’t venture away from the Tarmac apart from some muddy tracks on this occasion, the Land Cruiser will not be deterred by any of Mother Nature’s more destructive mood swings. It can wade through water up to 700mm deep, has ground clearance of 215mm, can climb at 42 degrees and it can also tow a caravan or trailer weighing up to three tonnes.

On the safety front, the higher up the trim grade you go, the more equipment you get. Our Utility model featured electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, vehicle stability control, trailer sway control, active traction control, multi-terrain ABS, Isofix settings and numerous airbags. The higher grades get the Toyota Safety Sense system which includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control, road sign assist and automatic high beam.

All in all, the Land Cruiser is excellent fun and a vehicle you feel almost indestructible in. And with prices ranging from £34,690 to £54,040, a choice of four trim levels, manual or automatic transmissions, three-or five door body styles and five or seven seat versions, there is a model out there to suit all needs and budgets.

There’s no denying it – the weather is getting worse every year and even the UK is being subjected to some truly dreadful wintry driving conditions.

And while it may not be the most environmentally-friendly vehicle on the planet, there is one thing that is guaranteed if you drive a Toyota Land Cruiser – a few inches of snow will not interfere with your day to day lifestyle.

You see this monster of a vehicle comes fitted with bumper-sized tyres and all the off-roading credentials you could dream of to take on the toughest and roughest terrains possible.

It’s a fact, the Land Cruiser will not leave that many vehicles standing at the lights but it does boast a top speed of 109mph – although it could take some time getting there.

But that aside, the Land Cruiser is quite a deceptive model and surprisingly handles with great agility and the excellent all-round visibility makes manoeuvrability very easy. Although, it has to be said, the parking sensors do make life a lot easier in tight parking spaces.

There are plenty of creature comforts throughout the cabin including cruise control, sat nav, an excellent sound system and even UV-protecting glass.

And the designers have given plenty of consideration to the positioning of all the dials, controls and levers which are all within easy reach so there is very little distraction to the driver.

The spacious cabin can comfortably accommodate eight people thanks to two rear seats that can easily be swivelled and folded away when not in use to open up a vast storage area.

But, for me this vehicle is rather like a caged animal that dreams of its release into the wilder terrains and when Mother Nature plays her part and drops a foot of snow on us, you can almost hear it purr with delight as you start the engine.

Basically, the Land Cruiser can tackle anything that’s thrown in its path with ease and to be perfectly blunt, the tougher the challenge the more fun you can have.

Loaded with a massive list of safety specifications such as anti-lock brakes, vehicle stability control, eight airbags and the world’s first hill-start assist, the Land Cruiser really is a vehicle for all seasons… particularly the tougher ones.
