Smart announces plans for open-top motoring

December 17, 2015

Fans of the funky smart brand will be delighted to hear that open-top versions of the city car will be on the road next spring. The compact smart fortwo cabrio, priced from £13,265, is fitted with an electrically-operated fabric roof that can be opened or closed in just 12 seconds even at motorway speed.

In standard finish, the roof is supplied in black but for an additional £115 the cloth top is available in red. A wind deflector adds a further £59 to the price-tag.

The two-seat cabrio will be available in three trim levels with prices topping out £15,550 for a turbocharged 898cc 90hp automatic model which has a claimed combined fuel economy figure of 67.3mpg and tax-free carbon emissions of 97g/km.

The entry level model is fitted with a 999cc engine developing 71bhp and rated at 65.7mpg with a carbon figure of 99g/km.

The 0-60 sprint time for the turbo driven car is 10.6 seconds and 14.4 seconds for the normally aspirated version. Both top out around the mid-90s mark.

When folded, the top sits above the luggage compartment and the cabrio is also fitted with detachable roof rails which can be stowed within the tailgate without impacting on the 260 litre boot space.

Like the hatchback fortwo, which was launched earlier in 2015, the cabrio measures just 2.69 metres in length and has a tiny turning circle of 6.95m making it perfect for manoeuvring through busy city centres and parking in tiny spaces.
