Hyundai takes flight

December 12, 2013

Here’s a first glimpse at the Intrado concept model which is due to be unveiled by Hyundai at next year’s Geneva Motor Show and has the potential to change the way that all cars are built in the future.
It is built around a super-lightweight structure made from a mixture of advanced materials which are joined together using a revolutionary technique and that’s not all because it features a next-generation hydrogen fuel cell drivetrain that is smaller and lighter than that powering the assembly-line-produced Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell.
The car is named after the underside of an aircraft’s wing, which produces lift, enabling flight to take place. And according to Hyundai, the advanced technical aspects of the Intrado also take inspiration from aircraft, including the removal of all unnecessary weight, the use of advanced materials and a highly efficient powertrain.
It has been styled and engineered primarily at Hyundai Motor’s European R&D centre in Germany under the direction of the firm’s President and Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer.
He said: “Hyundai Intrado envisages a motoring future that encapsulates the efficiency and freedom associated with flying. I believe in the power of mobility to deliver emotional as well as physical connections and this car helps us find again the joy of discovery.”
