Subaru Outback 2.0 R
When it comes to producing a vehicle that’s strikingly good looking, boasts great fuel economy and delivers a fabulous ride, the Subaru Outback has proved it has it all.
Despite being the first time Subaru has developed a diesel engine for one of its passenger cars, the Outback delivers the best fuel economy in the four-wheel-drive passenger class and also beats off many challengers in the two-wheel-drive class too.
And all this from a company that has built such an accomplished reputation on the gruelling rallying circuits around the world.
But does this mean Subaru has abandoned its outstanding performance criteria in place of a more greener future?
The answer is a resounding “no” as I found out in my test model – the 2.0-litre R which delivered an edge-of-the-seat ride and awesome power combined with classic Subaru road-holding ability.
In and around town the driver visibility is excellent and then out on the open road, the Outback really came into its own with excellent handling and plenty of power.
The one calmer feature to the Outback has to be its looks. Despite being quite an attractive vehicle it’s never going to take first prize in a beauty contest and rather lacks the spoiler and chrome exhausts I generally associate with the Subaru brand.
But that small criticism aside, the Outback really is a car for all seasons.
And not only does the Outback perform on the economy and driving front, it also boasts great comfort levels too.
Creature comforts include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated seats, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, alloy wheels and a great sound system
Then when you add in the fabulous safety and security spec such as anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution, numerous airbags, central locking and a Thatcham Category 1 alarm system, the £22k price tag seems all the more appealing too.
All in all, great value and great all-round fun with a greener edge to it.
