Skoda Roomster Level 2 1.9 TDI PD

Admittedly the Skoda Roomster may not win first prize in many beauty contests, but when it comes to versatility, practicality and comfort it does leave many rival vehicles trailing in its wake.

Its almost box-like shape is not exactly the most aesthetically pleasing, but there are plenty of good and valid reasons behind that chunky design. You see, it can easily accommodate four adults and instead of fighting over who will be relegated to the back seats there won’t be any squabbling because the rear-seat passengers are treated to bundles of room too.

The vast windows and panoramic roof mean the cabin is very light and airy, and occupants benefit from the excellent all-round visibility.

And the quality of top-notch features throughout cannot fail to impress either, from the CD player with eight speakers to the efficient air con system and heated door mirrors.

Skoda has packed the Roomster with quality safety equipment including anti-lock brakes, six airbags, remote central locking , adaptable seatbelts plus plenty more.

But the really impressive feature for me was the vehicle’s road-holding and general all-round performance.

I somewhat apprehensively tested the Roomster during some fairly heavy snow falls and not once did it waiver from the challenge. The grip in icy conditions was excellent and despite the high sides it wasn’t shunted at all by strong winds.

In and around town the 1.9-litre engine delivered plenty of power for a nippy and responsive drive and out on the more open road the Roomster was also a pleasure to drive.

It’s a fact, this is never going to be a vehicle to appeal to the baseball-hat-the-wrong-way-round brigade, but in fairness, that’s not a bad thing because there is certainly a market out there for such a quality car that is outstanding value for money.
