Peugeot 4007 GT DCS Hdi 156 (automatic)

It seems to be a fact these days that every 24 hours we are guaranteed a downpour and with wetter roads and grimmer driving conditions, what better way to tackle the challenge than with a classy off-roader.

Admittedly, Peugeot may not be the first name that springs to mind when it comes to producing beefy vehicles capable of taking on all Mother Nature can throw in its path, but the 4007 is something a little bit special.

Designed in co-ordination with Mitsubishi, it is Peugeot’s first venture into the sports utility vehicle market and it has certainly made rivals such as Hyundai and Toyota sit up and take note.

For the 4007 is generously equipped with top notch features and boasts comfort levels that are the envy of many other companies.

First impressions are vital when buying a vehicle and the 4007 doesn’t disappoint.

Immediately you are drawn to the rugged design features with a front-end grille that looks like it’s baring its teeth at you, light clusters that sweep around and over the side of the bonnet, roof bars, tinted windows and chunky 18in alloys.

And the design inside is equally as impressive, especially on the top-of-the-range GT model supplied for the test drive.

It boasts soft leather upholstery throughout which combines beautifully with the black fascia panel and aluminium-coloured finish. The seats are heated and can easily be adjusted to find the perfect driving position.

And the spec includes automatic air conditioning with climate control, parking sensors, cruise control, an ear-bursting sound system plus plenty more.

The driver can choose from three driving modes depending on the conditions.

There is the more usual two-wheel or four-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive-locked which is ideal for more difficult road surfaces. These are selected by simply turning a dial located between the two front seats.

The 4007 offers excellent all-round visibility thanks to the high-seated driver’s position and all occupants are treated to great comfort levels. An additional two seats can be used if required or left laying flat to increase the already impressive load level.

The drive itself is a smooth comfortable one with the vehicle easing effortlessly through the six-speed automatic transmission and the 2.2-litre engine delivering plenty of oomph, especially out on the open road.

All in all, Peugeot’s first venture into the SUV market has to be described as a resounding success and one that will surely put the frighteners on some of the more established 4×4 manufacturers.
